About Lectopia @ UWA

Lectopia (known as the iLecture System from 1999-mid 2006) was developed by staff in UWA's Multimedia Centre in response to the institution's commitment to flexible modes of teaching and learning. Initially implemented at UWA in 1999, Lectopia is an innovative, easy-to-use system that facilitates the recording of lectures and events for delivery via the internet.

With Lectopia, students can access lecture recordings over the internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at their own convenience. Through Lectopia, audio and visuals from traditional face-to-face lectures and events are automatically recorded and processed into a variety of streaming media formats, with minimal impact on the lecturer or presenter.

UWA Information

At UWA Lectopia is installed in a large number of lecture theatres at UWA (see the Supported UWA Venues page for a full list), and is utilised by many teaching and administrative areas across the campus. Note that normal semester-based bookings for the Lectopia service are available at no charge as the Multimedia Centre is centrally funded to provide this service for the University.

The recording process is simple using Lectopia. For venues installed with Lectopia, all that is required is for the lecturer or presenter to turn on the microphone for the recording to begin. Alternatively, an audio/visual recording can be made on another media and processed by the Lectopia team for presentation in online format.

The audio and visuals from recordings can be incorporated into unit pages on WebCT, discipline/section websites, or compiled into CD/DVD format. Recordings are made available in a variety of formats (streaming, download, podcasting) and no special software is required to view recordings. Associated materials such as powerpoint presentations and slides can be made available together with these recordings.

In recent years UWA staff and students have embraced the use of Lectopia as part of UWA's teaching and learning environment. In semester one 2006 Lectopia recorded over 400 lectures each week, and received an average of 15,000 hits per week.
